Emergency ferry set up

HATTERAS ISLAND, N.C. – Hurricane Sandy has cut off the island here from the mainland, as NC 12, the barrier island highway, has been made impassable by high seas, the News Observer reports. Thus, emergency ferry service has been set up to serve islanders. This is the second time this year the ferry has been needed. It will make seven daily round trips between Stumpy Point and Hatteras Island’s village of Rodanthe, with runs starting yesterday.

However, trips will only be for residents, property owners, and those needed for emergency services. Tourists and visitors will not be allowed to visit Hatteras or Ocracoke islands until further notice. A similar situation was created after Hurricane Irene. The damage to NC 12 is consider much more severe this time around.
