Crowley Maritime christens its newest tugs

In late October, Crowley Maritime Corp. and Bollinger Shipyards Inc. hosted christening ceremonies for Crowley’s new Ocean-class tugs — Ocean Wave and Ocean Wind — on the Mississippi riverfront in New Orleans. The 146’x46, DP-1 tugs are outfitted for long range, high-capacity ocean towing, rig moves, and other missions.
The tugs’ Caterpillar C-280 5,440-hp main engines and Cat generators are all Tier 2 compliant. For safety, the new tugs feature waterfall-style winches, shark jaws and retractable pins that can all be controlled from the pilothouse. The tugs are designed to have a minimum bollard pull of 150 metric tons and with a range of 12,600 nautical miles at 15 knots free running.
The tugs are outfitted with twin-screw, controllable-pitch Berg 4-bladed propellers in nozzles and high-lift rudders. The Cat C-280s turn the Berg 153.5″-dia. props through Reintjes LAP 5666 marine gear. The Wave and Wind also have a Berg VFD, 850-hp electric bowthruster, while the DP-2 Sun and Sky will have two Berg VFD 500-hp electric bowthrusters and a Berg 500-hp stern thruster. Karl Senner Inc. supplied the Berg and Reintjes equipment.
