Corps helps with Sandy cleanup

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers worked to clear storm debris from New York’s Fire Island as part of the federal government’s Hurricane Sandy recovery efforts. Debris removal began March 2 and was scheduled to be completed by March 31. Removal operations throughout the remote barrier island located off Long Island’s south shore (complicated by narrow spaces, restricted beach access and winter weather), were carefully coordinated with local, state and other federal agencies to minimize disturbance to residents and Fire Island’s sensitive ecosystem.
