The Coast Guard Sector Upper Mississippi River (UMR) has released a chart detailing the locations of the 11 barges that sunk after a breakaway on April 21. The coal-laden American Commercial Lines barges have all been accounted for and are located from Mile Marker 159 UMR to Mile 172 UMR.
The company was developing plans to salvage 11 of the coal-laden barges that sank and the salvage will be completed as water levels recede. A total 114 barges broke free on Saturday morning and 84 of them belonged to ACL. The loose barges were rounded up in less than 18 hours.
Late Monday afternoon, the Coast Guard reopened a 15-mile stretch from MM 155 and 170 to traffic after determining that none of the 11 barges that sank were a risk to navigation.
