BOEM approves 15th deepwater drilling permit

Today, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement (BOEM) approved a drilling permit for the 15th deepwater well to comply with the new safety standards implemented after the Deepwater Horizon explosion and resulting oil spill. The new permit also meets the requirement to demonstrate the capacity to contain a subsea blowout, according to BOEM.

The approved permit for BHP Billiton Petroleum (GOM) Inc. is to drill a new development well in Green Canyon Block 653 in 4,232 feet of water approximately 120 miles off the Louisiana coast south of Houma, La. Today’s approval is for a new well to be drilled under a Development Operations Coordination Document that was approved on May 31 on which BOEM completed a site-specific Environmental Assessment.
Drilling permit data is updated daily by BOEM.
