ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Coast Guard officials said yesterday that Kyle Hardman, a barge worker on the Mississippi River, died on Tuesday following the rescue of a family whose bass boat ran out of gas.
Just south of the Gateway Arch here, the boat drifted up against Hardman’s barge, when he and another worker put a boat in the water to try to help the family, which included a one-year-old and four-year-old child. Hardman’s boat overturned, putting him and the other worker into the water, and then the bass boat began taking on water as well.
By the time a second barge was able to rescue all seven people in the water, and they were taken to the hospital, Hardman, aged 55, died from his injuries.
