Our infrastructure needs help
I slipped through London last week. Smiles, handshakes, and more coffee than tea. The muted roar of a jetliner, stale cabin air, surly customs agent, and a New York cab. I’m now back at my desk, 19 floors up and with New York Harbor in front of me.

Rigs are still leaving the Gulf
Officially, the deepwater drilling moratorium ends around Nov. 30 or so. But will it? It looked like the industry was on the right track until the recent Mariner Energy platform accident in the Gulf. Now, with Congress in a bad mood, who knows how this will affect any new laws and regulations?

Inland ports eye new Panama Canal business
Several inland ports are taking some very proactive steps to get ready for an increase in business after the Panama Canal expansion is completes in 2014. The Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway and the Port of Gulfport, Miss., recently signed agreements with the Panama Canal Authority to foster economic growth, encourage international trade, and promote the concept of the “All-Water Route” from Asia to the U.S. East and Gulf coasts via the Panama Canal.

Shipyard workers have options
In July, Northrop Grumman announced it would be laying off more than 110 workers at its Avondale Shipyard in New Orleans. More disturbing was the news that Northrop would be closing Avondale down for good by 2013 and would consolidate its Gulf Coast operations at its Pascagoula, Miss., facility.
