HMS Bounty launched at Boothbay Harbor Shipyard

10/22/2012

BOOTHBAY HARBOR, Maine - The HMS Bounty, the replica ship built for the film, "Mutiny on the Bounty," was launched from Boothbay Harbor Shipyard here on Thursday after routine maintenance. A square-rigged tallship, the Bounty put in at Boothbay Harbor in mid-September and spent roughly a month in drydock, getting a new coat of paint, some caulk in leaky seams, and new crew quarters, along with some other maintenance matters.

With the work done, she was launched without incident back into Boothbay Harbor with a 10.3-foot high tide. You can watch the launch here:

Okay, so there really isn't a satisfying splash there, is there? We understand your possible disappointment, so we dug up this video of the HMS Bounty in some seriously rough seas back in 2010. Take a look:

Boothbay Harbor Shipyard has been in continuous operation for 135 years-plus, and was formerly known as Sample's Shipyard. It has a 700-ton marine railway and another 150-ton railway. You can learn more here.
