Wash. union launches 'Save Our Ferries' campaign
OLYMPIA, Wash. - Concerned about dwindling resources and short staffs, the Marine Engineers' Beneficial Association has launched a "Save Our Ferries" campaign here in Washington state, the bulwark of which is a newly produced video recently uploaded to YouTube.
In the video, union workers make the case for Washington State Ferries, the country's largest ferry operation and the third largest in the world, with testimony from passengers and examples of union workers performing feats of derring do.
As local station KOKO notes, the Washington state ferry system lost some $150 million in funding with the passage of I-695 in 1999, and has been struggling to acquire new funding streams ever since.
