Crowley Maritime Corp.’s new 146'x46'x25' Ocean-class tug Ocean Wave went on sea trials recently in the Gulf of Mexico. This video from the tug's builder Bollinger Shipyards Inc. shows the boat being put through some of its paces. The delivery of the Ocean Wave is the first of four Ocean-class tugs under construction at Bollinger Marine Fabricators in Amelia, La. The Ocean Wave and the next in line for delivery, Ocean Wind, are classed as DP-1 tugs and are twin-screw, steel-hulled boats. The third and fourth tugs of the class, Ocean Sky and Ocean Sun, will be classed as DP-2 and will be 10' longer to accommodate the equipment needed for the dynamic positioning upgrade.
The new tugs are designed and built to work with Crowley's new 455-series heavy lift 400'x105' deck barges that are built to offer increased stability for loads up to 4,200 lbs. per sq. ft. Additionally, the tugs will be outfitted for rig moves, platform and Floating Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) unit tows, emergency response and firefighting. The tugs will also have the capability to support salvage and rescue towing opportunities.
