Port Corpus Christi Commission began its first meeting of 2012 with the administration of the public service
oath to Al Jones and Charles W. Zahn Jr. to replace Robert Gonzalez Jr., and
Francis I. Gandy Jr. and to re-appoint Richard M. Borchard.
“My fellow Port Commissioners and I welcome Al and Charles
to the commission and congratulate Richard for his re-appointment. We
look forward to working with them to continue moving the port forward
fulfilling its mission as the economic engine of South Texas,” says Mike
Carrell, Port Commission chairman, in a commission press release.
Al Jones, American Bank’s chairman of the board and CEO, was
appointed by the City of Corpus Christi to replace Francis I. Gandy Jr., who
did not seek re-appointment.
Charles W. Zahn Jr., a local lawyer, was appointed by Nueces
County to replace Robert Gonzalez who was term–out after serving the Port
Commission for the last 12 years.
Jones’ affiliations are numerous, on the academic field; he
is part of the executive committee for the University of Texas Chancellor’s
Council and member of the board and past chairman of the Texas A&M Corpus
Christi Foundation. His professional involvement includes Bank Advisory
Council for the Federal Reserve Bank of San Antonio and board of directors and former
chairman for the Independent Bankers Association of Texas.
Jones is involved in numerous organizations in the area such
as the State of Texas Economic Development Corp., the Corpus Christi Regional Economic
Development Corp., and Christus Spohn Health System.
He is a recipient of many awards like the Corpus Christi
Business Hall of Fame and the Russell Kirkland Distinguished Visitor from Texas
A&M Corpus Christi School of Business. Jones and his wife, Janet, have
been married for 44 years.
Charles W. Zahn Jr. graduated with a bachelor of arts degree
from Texas A&M University and obtained his juris doctor from Baylor
University. He is a partner of the Law Offices of Charles W. Zahn Jr.
His involvement in the community includes but is not limited
to the American Bar Association, the State Bar of Texas, Corpus Christi Bar
Association, Secretary and General Counsel for the Island Management Corp., and
the Mustang Investment Corp. He’s also a member and past chairman of the
Port Aransas Parks and Recreation Board, the Nueces County Board of Park
Commission, and the Port Aransas Rotary Club. Zahn is the founder of the
Port Aransas Preservation and Historical Association, Aransas County and Port
Aransas ISD Education Foundations.
