Orion Marine lands $9m dredging contract

1/24/2013

PORT LAVACA, Texas - With a bid of $9.003 million, Orion Marine Group was awarded the contract with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for maintenance and dredging of the Matagorda Ship Channel, which allows access into Matagorda Bay and the port here, which saw 29 deep draft vessels arrive in December.

However, according to a report in the local paper, port board members were less than enthused with the Corps' decision. There was an option to bring the dredge template down another foot deeper for an additional $583,725, but the Corps did not award that option. Board chairman Randy Boyd was particularly displeased: "I recommend that we write a letter to the Corps, stating our disgust with this," he said at the most recent board meeting.

The Corps said it could not award the extra option because they had already reached the maximum amount of funds it could send to the Matagorda Ship Channel at this time.

The Orion contract will cover a portion of the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway as well as the ship channel. The dredging should begin next week.
