NEW YORK - Following Hurricane Sandy, thousands of derelict
vessels litter shores of the New York and New Jersey coasts, much like in this Coast Guard photo of Great Kills Harbor, N.Y., from Nov. 3. Coast Guard Sector New York said it is working with local boat
owners to locate missing vessels and provide salvage information in order to
make affected waterways more navigable.
To that end they are asking boat owners to contact the sector command center at
718-354-4120 to inquire or to provide information on any missing or
derelict boats since Hurricane Sandy made landfall.
The
Coast Guard will not salvage vessels but will work with boat owners to
locate their vessel or provide information for commercial salvage.
